When your small child gets a head cold, it can be hard to know how you can help. Because colds usually don’t have any medication to give that’s safe and effective, it’s generally just a waiting game for the cold to run its course through their system. But knowing this doesn’t make the days with a head cold any easier on you or your child. Luckily, there are some things you can do to help relieve their symptoms and help them feel at least a little better. To show you how, here are three ways you can help your child suffering from a head cold.

Get Steamy

Just because you usually won’t give your child traditional medication when they have a cold doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do to make them feel better. According to Wendy C. Fries, a contributor to WebMD, one of the best things you can do to help your child with a head cold is to use humidity to your advantage. To do this, you can either use the steam of a shower or use a humidifier to artificially increase the humidity of the room your child’s in. When you use steam, the mucus that comes along with your child’s head cold gets broken up, giving them some relief in their sinuses.

Use Saline for Nasal Congestion

If your child’s too young to know how to properly blow his or her nose, it can be a real challenge to get all their snot out and allow them the chance to breathe normally. To help clear them out more than they can do on their own, KidsHealth.org suggests using a saline solution or saltwater drops to add moisture to their nose and sinuses. By dropping a few drops of this saline solution in their nose, it can help relieve a lot of the congestion they feel throughout their nasal passages, especially when combined with some kind of suction to help get the mucus and saline out.

Lots of Liquids

To help your child get their cold worked through their system, you should prioritize getting them as many liquids into their system as you can. Jeannette Moninger, a contributor to Parents.com, shares that not only will liquids help to thin out mucus, but it will also help you ensure that your child is staying hydrated enough to fight off their infection. For best results, try to give drinks that are either ice cold or rather warm, and don’t forget to add things like honey to help ease their pain and give them a little more comfort at this tough time.

If you have a little one suffering through a head cold, use the tips mentioned above to help make both of your lives a little more bearable.
