In these uncertain times, it can be really good to take some time out and think of the good things you have in your life. While you are doing that, in order to give thanks for the abundance you have, it is always a good idea to help those less fortunate than you. Supporting your local church is an excellent way to do that because the church is always there for those who need it.

If that sounds like something you might like to do, here are some of the best ways to support your local church right now:

1. Volunteer your admin skills

When people think about supporting their church they very rarely conjure up images of sitting in an office doing paperwork and making phone calls, but of course, churches need to be run like any other organisation, which means, if you have decent admin skills, you could help your church out by donating your time. Whether you take the time to negotiate a better deal on church heating, deal with ordering supplies or help out with the books, there are so many valuable contributions you can make to your church. Talk to your vicar or priest to see what kinds of tasks they may need help with right now and jump right in.

2. Donate

Donating money is a really simple way to help your local church and bolster your religion. As well as helping to pay for the upkeep of the building, any money you give will also be used to help people in need in the community. Most churches run various outreach projects from soup kitchens and foodbanks to luncheon clubs for the elderly and disenfranchised. The great thing about donating your money this way is that it usually stays in your local community where you can see the good it does and hopefully get involved with your time too.

4. Help out with Sunday school

If your church has a Sunday school, then helping out by maybe teaching a class or helping the regular teacher is a great way to serve your church. Not only do you get to do something useful for the congregation, but you also get to see the face’s of the local children as they learn more about the bible and grow into their faith which can be a very rewarding experience all around.

5. Mentor a young person

Many churches run programmes to help young people in the local community to get through tough times such as the loss of a parent or a crisis of faith. If you feel like you may have something to offer them, it could be worth seeing if you can get involved., There are few things more rewarding than helping a young person realise their strength, find their faith and improve their life for the better, and there is no bigger act of living your faith than being that person either.

6. Become a church greeter

Greeting people may seem like such a simple thing to do but many people who are attending church for the first time are nervous about doing so and seeing a friendly face can make a whole lot of difference to them, as can a few kind words and a genuine smile.

7. Pray

Praying for your church and the people who come together inside its walls is the greatest act of love that you can perform at any time. It will not only help to strengthen the congregation, but it will also help to strengthen your own faith too. As a Christian, you will know that there is power in prayer, so even if it doesn’t feel like you are making a major contribution when you see other people donating lots of money or volunteering every day, you really are. Prayer is never something that you should sell short.

8. Clean

Cleaning the church, mowing the lawns and helping with any little DIY projects that need doing is a good way to show your commitment to the church and give back to the congregation who have always been there for you. It’s a little act of love that will make a huge difference to each and every person who visits the building and it will not go unappreciated.

As you can see, there are lots of simple things you can do to support your local church as they support those around you in the community. Giving back does lots of good and it helps you to get closer to God, so what are you waiting for?
